Glee's Mark Salling found dead after an apparent suicide

Mark Salling's victims will not receive restitution after his death, The Daily News reports.

Each victim who filed for restitution was originally ordered to receive $50,000 from the former Glee actor who pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography. Salling died on Tuesday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 35. Salling's exact cause of death is currently unknown, though according to TMZ, the actor died of an apparent suicide. Salling's attorney, Michael Proctor, confirmed his client's death to People, saying, "I can confirm that Mark Salling passed away early this morning. Mark was a gentle and loving person, a person of great creativity, who was doing his best to atone for some serious mistakes and errors of judgment. He is survived by his mother and father, and his brother. The Salling family appreciates the support they have been receiving and asks for their privacy to be respected."
In October, Salling pleaded guilty to child pornography charges, avoiding what could have been a 20-year sentence and a lifetime of supervised parole. His sentencing was scheduled for March 7th. Salling was expected to serve between four and seven years in jail, register as a sex offender and pay $50,000 to each victim who submitted a restitution request. Salling was arrested in Los Angeles in 2015 and authorities reportedly found over 50,000 images and videos of child pornography and erotica on his laptop, while a thumb drive contained an additional 4,000 images and 160 videos. Per federal prosecutors, some of Salling's victims were between three and five years old. Salling admitted to using software to hide his IP and download child pornography. As an actor, Salling was best known for playing football-star-turned-singer Noah Puckerman on Glee. He starred in a handful of TV movies as well, but had few other roles outside the hit television show.

Fani-Kayode has heart disease, lawyer tells court

The trial of a former Minister of Aviation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, for an alleged fraud of N4.9bn was stalled on Wednesday due to his absence from the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Counsel for the ex-minister, Mr. Norrison Quakers (SAN), told the court that his client was unable to make it to court as he had been hospitalised for a heart disease.
While praying the court to grant him an adjournment, Quakers promised to furnish the court with a medical report to back Fani-Kayode’s claim of ill health.
The adjournment prayer was not opposed by the prosecuting counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo.
But the prosecutor urged the presiding judge, Justice Rilwan Aikawa, to observe the provision of Section 396(4) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, which stipulated that no party, in a criminal case, could have more than five adjournments.
Oyedepo noted that already, the case had been adjourned twice at Fani-Kayode’s instance.
After hearing the parties out, Justice Aikawa adjourned the case till February 28 and March 1 and 2, 2018.
The EFCC arraigned Fani-Kayode on 17 counts of money laundering alongside a former Minister of State for Finance, Nenadi Usman, who was listed as the first defendant in the charge.
The third and fourth defendants in the case are one Danjuma Yusuf and a company, Joint Trust Dimensions Limited.
The charges border on alleged conspiracy, unlawful retention of proceeds of theft and money laundering.
Fani-Kayode, who was the Director of Publicity of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign organisation for the 2015 election, was accused of conspiring with the others to, directly and indirectly, retain various sums, which the EFCC claimed they ought to have reasonably known were proceeds of crime.
In one of the counts, the defendants were accused of conspiring among themselves to “indirectly retain the sum of N1,500, 000,000.00 which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: stealing.”
The four were also accused of indirectly retaining N300m, N400m and N800m, all proceeds of corruption, according to EFCC.
Fani-Kayode was accused of directly using parts of the money at various times, including a N250,650,000.00, which he allegedly used between March 20 and 25, 2015.
Fani-Kayode was also accused of making a cash transaction of N24m with one Olubode Oke, said to still be at large, on February 12, 2015 “to Paste Poster Co of 125, Lewis Street, Lagos Island.”
The duo were said to have made the transaction without going through any financial institution, an act the EFCC claimed was contrary to sections 1(a) and 16(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012, and punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the same Act.
But the defendants pleaded not guilty.‎  (Punch)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joins Arsenal

Arsenal have completed the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund for £55 million plus £5m in further add-ons.
The 28-year-old joined from Borussia Dortmund on a long-term contract for a club-record fee.
Auba is one of the world’s most highly-rated strikers. He scored 98 goals in 144 Bundesliga games for Dortmund and had a hand in 172 goals in 213 matches in all competitions for his former club.
That works out at an average of 96 minutes per goal or assist.
Auba is the Gabon captain and all-time top goalscorer, and became the first Gabonese winner of the African Footballer of the Year award in 2015.

Arsenal's Mesut Ozil signs new contract through to 2021

Mesut Ozil has ended speculation over his future by signing a new three-year deal with Arsenal, a source close to the player has told ESPN FC.
Ozil, 29, was due to be out of contract at the end of the season but will now be tied to the club until the summer of 2021.
The deal, worth £12 million a year after tax, comes on the same day that Arsenal announced the club-record signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.
However, a source said Ozil's decision was not related to the Aubameyang deal but that the German playmaker simply decided he wanted to remain at Arsenal and in London.
Ozil turned down interest from Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona -- as well as a huge offer from Chinese Super League club Guangzhou worth £25 million a year, the source said.
The deal is worth around £350,000 before tax -- or £230,000 a week net -- which more than doubles Ozil's previous salary and makes him by far the highest paid player in the club's history.
Aubameyang and fellow new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan reportedly signed deals worth £180,000 a week.
It comes a massive boost to Arsenal following Alexis Sanchez's decision to leave for Manchester United last week, especially with the Gunners languishing in sixth place in the Premier League and eight points off the Champions League places.  (ESPN)

Why Chicago- bound passenger was restrained on flight – Emirates

Emirates Airline on Wednesday explained why a 71- year old passenger, David Ukesone, was restrained on a flight between Dubai and Chicago.
The airline said Ukesone was unruly on board the flight and forced his way into another passenger’s seat.
Emirates said the passenger engaged in air rage by biting another passenger, forcing the cabin attendants to professionally restrain him during the flight in order not to endanger the lives of other passengers and safety of the aircraft.
The airline, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said: “Emirates can confirm that Mr. Ukesone was a passenger on flight EK235 from Dubai to Chicago on 23 January, and that he had to be restrained by cabin crew due to unruly behaviour during the flight.
“Despite the best efforts of our crew to intervene and reason with him, Mr. Ukesone repeatedly disturbed other passengers, refused to remain in his assigned seat and forced his way into another cabin class.
‘He also assaulted crew and bite another passenger. As a consequence he was restrained by our crew. Our cabin crew members are highly trained to ensure the safety and security of our passengers, and constantly monitored Mr. Ukesone’s welfare throughout the flight. The safety and security of our passengers and crew is of the utmost importance and will not be compromised.
‘Upon arrival at the airport, the passenger was handed over to the authorities in Chicago. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the other passengers on the flight for their understanding, in particular the individuals who had assisted our crew during the flight.”
According to reports, the 71-year-old Nigerian had alleged he was punched in the face, his mouth taped and bounded like a prisoner for eight hours he was on the trip to reunite with his family.
The man said his offence was that he got into a dispute with the flight attendants over his seat number and the matter escalated.
Ukesone said he hadn’t been on a plane in over 35 years.

Herdsmen, farmers hold peace meeting in Jigawa

Police in Jigawa have held a security summit for farmers and herdsmen in a bid to find solutions to the security challenges in the region.
The state police command in collaboration with eight local government councils in Jigawa North-east and Hadejia Emirate councils organised the summit.
The summit provided a platform for deliberation to seek solutions to the escalating herdsmen and farmers clashes faces in the state and North-east zone.
The gathering which took place on Wednesday at Kirikasamma local council headquarters, was presided over by the state police commissioner, Bala Senchi.
Mr. Bala at the event said the attendance was an indication that the people were ready to cooperate to end the carnage.
“The crises control that we always implied will not solve the problems, what will solve the problems is that, the government needs to be proactive instead of reactive in responding to the problem,” he said.
Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, the state deputy governor said Jigawa witnessed a high prevalence of farmers and pastoral conflict especially in the North-eastern part of the state.
Mr. Hassan further warned both parties not to take laws into their hands.

‘R. Kelly is not going to jail because his victims are not white’ – Angry father claims

According to the father of one of R. Kelly’s girlfriends, R. Kelly is getting away with his alleged sex cult because America doesn’t care about underage black girls being victimized.
Angelo Clary told TMZ he’s incredulous Kelly isn’t facing the same fate as Harvey Weinstein or Bill Cosby and believes race is the only difference.
R. Kelly Would Be Jailed If His GFs Were White, Angry Father Claims lailasnews 2
Angelo’s 20-year-old daughter, Azriel Clary, is one of the singer’s alleged victims.
Angelo says Azriel was 17 when she met Kelly to discuss her music career. He and Azriel’s mother were there, but he claims Kelly slipped his number to Azriel when they weren’t looking.
Shortly after that, Azriel moved in with R. Kelly.
Angelo hasn’t seen his daughter since, and last spoke to her 8 months ago.
Another family, Joycelyn Savage’s family, also accused Kelly of cutting them off from their daughter. Just like the Savage family, Angelo says police told him there’s nothing they can do unless Azriel claims she’s being held against her will.
Last year July, BuzzFeed published an article alleging that singer R. Kelly was holding multiple young women — most of them 19 or in their early 20s — in various properties around the United States and forbidding them to leave what their parents described as a “cult.”
The women claim to be with Kelly of their own free will, but their families say that they’re suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.
According to BuzzFeed’s report, the women in R. Kelly’s homes are forced to follow Kelly’s every instruction or face physical punishment.
The story followed several decades’ worth of lawsuits against R. Kelly that alleged he’d engaged in traumatizing sexual relationships with young women, some of them underage.
But few of the women named in those suits were willing to come forward and speak to the press, presumably at least in part because they’d signed nondisclosure agreements with Kelly in exchange for settlement money.
One of his victims who spoke out, Pace (maiden name Johnson) said she first met Kelly as a 15-year-old fan outside a court building, when he was on trial for charges of child pornography in 2008.
She went to the proceedings daily, until Kelly’s acquittal. A year later, at age 16, she says she lost her virginity to R. Kelly.

Ex-Italy football coach Vicini dies

Former Italy national coach Azeglio Vicini, who led the Azzurri to third place at the 1990 World Cup on home soil, has died at the age of 84.

Vicini managed the national side from 1986 to 1991, leading them to the semi-finals of the 1988 European Championships and also the 1990 World Cup.

Fondly remembered as “the coach of the magical nights” for his role in Italia ’90, Vicini passed away at his home in the northern city of Brescia, Italian press reported Wednesday.

The Italian football federation said that a minute’s silence would be held in his memory at games starting with Wednesday evening’s Italian Cup match between AC Milan and Lazio at San Siro.

During his 13-year senior playing career Vicini lined up for Vicenza, Sampdoria and Brescia.

He coached Italy’s Under-23 team from 1975 and then their Under-21s before taking over the senior squad from World Cup-winning coach Enzo Bearzot in 1986, but he will mainly be remembered for being at the helm of Italy when the country hosted the World Cup.

He guided them to the last four where their campaign was halted by Diego Maradona’s Argentina in a penalty shoot-out.

He was succeeded by Arrigo Sacchi in 1991, and later coached his hometown team Cesena and Udinese before retiring in 1994.

Senate to probe ex-JAMB, NECO registrars over low remittances

The Senate at the plenary on Wednesday resolved to investigate former registrars of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board over low remittances during their administration of the board.

The probe will also be extended to the National Examinations Council and the West African Examination Council.

WAEC is an international examination body for the West African sub-region.

The move was based on a point of order raised by Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi-West), who said JAMB’s revenue had skyrocketed under a new administration and asked that NECO and WAEC, with larger structure, be probed on their remittances.

Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, had succeeded Prof. Dibu Ojerinde as Registrar of JAMB.

Melaye said, “I want to bring to the attention of the Senate that it has been declared that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board made internally generated revenue of N5bn in 2016 and they improved on that in 2017 by generating N7bn.

“Before then, remittance from JAMB to the Federation Account used to be (between) N500m to N700m.

“I am bringing it to the attention of the Senate that since JAMB has showed that it could remit N7bn, then we can encourage our relevant committees to work on NECO and WAEC that have wider financial statuses.

“WAEC and NECO have more people writing their exams than JAMB.

“We can make more money as a people and as a country if there is proper oversight and if the corruption pipes in those two places are blocked.

“My intention is to bring this to the attention of the Senate, and the presiding officer can ask the relevant committee to please take this up.”

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, in his remarks, asked Chairman of the Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary), Senator Aliyu Wamakko, to educate the lawmakers next week on the examination bodies and their revenues.

Olivier Giroud joins Chelsea for £18m

Olivier Giroud has completed his transfer to Chelsea for £18million.

Giroud leaves Arsenal having played in their 3-1 defeat to Swansea on Tuesday night, coming off the bench in the latter stages of the game.

The French striker has now signed an 18-month contract at Stamford Bridge, where he will provide much-needed competition for the struggling Alvaro Morata.

Giroud has found it hard to win his place in the Arsenal starting XI this season, with manager Arsene Wenger preferring to start Alexandre Lacazette in his place.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's arrival to the Emirates has forced the 31-year-old, who was keen to stay in London despite Borussia Dortmund links, out of the club.

For Chelsea, it is a positive end to their search for a new striker.

Their move for West Ham's Andy Carroll was scuppered through injury, while they also considered moves for Ashley Barnes, Peter Crouch and Edin Dzeko.

Giroud was a surprise inclusion in Arsenal's squad for the game against Swansea given the transfer rumours.

Nigeria’s Isaac Success joins Malaga on loan

Isaac Success is leaving Watford for Malaga on loan after an unsuccessful spell at the EPL club.

The forward is returning to La Liga to join Malaga on loan for the rest of the season.

Success arrived signed for Watford in a club record £12.5m deal in the summer of 2016 but has scored only one goal for the club.

He has made one appearance this season owing to a knee injury.

Senate President tasks police on crime control

The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, on Wednesday in Abuja, tasked the Nigerian Police Force on the need to do more in tackling crime in order to restore confidence in all Nigerians.

Saraki made this remark when a delegation from the Police Service Commission visited him at the National Assembly Complex.

The Senate president, who lauded the efforts of the police in ensuring a peaceful and secured society, said the security challenges confronting the country should be tackled frontally.

He, however, said that the Senate would give urgent attention to the bill seeking to establish the Police Academy in Kano to promote professionalism in the force and guarantee improved welfare of policemen.

“With what is happening in the country; this is not the time to apportion blame but to find solutions.

“The Police Service Commission is critical through its advisory role in ensuring professionalism in the police force.

“As there is the need to stamp out corruption, it is equally important to reform the police force to ensure that policemen effectively provide the needed services to the nation.

“We are not happy where we are today, it is about time we take it up and correct and we need to be sincere in doing that,’’ Saraki said.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Sir Mike Okiro, expressed worry that nothing had been heard since the bill was submitted to the 7th National Assembly in 2012.

Okiro called for concerted efforts from both chambers of the National Assembly to ensure that the bill is passed expeditiously in order to give a legal backing to the cadets, who would graduate from the institution.

Viral VIDEO & PHOTOS: Rat taking its bath like a human being is now a superstar

A bizarre video of a rat appearing to be standing on its hind legs and scrubbing itself with soap in a kitchen sink, reportedly taken in a bathroom sink in Huaraz city, Ancash, Peru has hit the net!
The rodent appears to be in his element, rubbings the cleanser between his hands and over his body like a human in a shower
The rodent appears to be in his element, rubbings the cleanser between his hands and over his body like a human in a shower. Electronic DJ Jose Correa, who claims he filmed the video, said he was about to take a shower when he spotted the unusual sight on Saturday morning - and couldn't believe his eyes.
Jose, 36, said: 'He was just like a human, I've never seen anything like it. 'It went on for about 30 seconds, and then he ran off. I think he just wanted to give himself a good clean. 'I care a lot about animals so I wanted to protect his privacy. I would never want to hurt him. So I just filmed him and let him go.'
Jose said he is astounded the video has made such a big splash online - and that he's been fielding messages from the world over. The clip has racked up 37 million views in just two days after being posted on Reddit, but viewers of the video questioned its authenticity. Some said the rat was either a puppet or it was being controlled using animatronics. One keen-eyed observer noticed the rat is missing a tail. Katherine Guest commented on Jose Correa's video asking 'Where's his tail? Rats have a very long tail, very hard to hide an entire tail behind them.
