PHOTOS From Rihanna's Baby Shower

Pregnant Rihanna and A$AP Rocky hosted a rave-themed baby shower last Friday night, just two days after the rapper’s arrest.
The superstar couple hosted a celebration for their first child just two days after Rocky was arrested while arriving at LAX. According to HipHollywood, the rave-themed bash was held on Friday night at a studio in Hollywood. Guests were asked to wear bright neon-colored outfits to the “over-the-top soiree,” but were not allowed to film or photograph.

Earth, Wind & Fire saxophonist Andrew Woolfolk dead at 71

"September," Earth, Wind & Fire's effervescent ode to the last night of summer, is an enduring jam for all seasons.
Part of its alchemy lies in Andrew Woolfolk's jubilant saxophone. Woolfolk, a longtime Earth, Wind & Fire member whose sweet signature instrument made songs like "September" impossible not to dance to, has died, group member Philip Bailey announced. Woolfolk was 71.
Bailey, co-lead singer of the genre-spanning band, said on Instagram that Woolfolk died after a six-year illness. "I met him in High School, and we quickly became friends and band mates," Bailey wrote.
"Great memories. Great talent. Funny. Competitive. Quick witted. And always styling."
Woolfolk joined the band in the early 1970s, according to the band's official roster. The EW&F lineup changed often throughout the years, but Woolfolk officially played the sax (as well as flute and percussion) with the group on and off until 1993. With Earth, Wind & Fire, Woolfolk’s soprano saxophone became a signature sound, most recognizably on “September,” one of the band’s biggest hits. The legendary group lost its founder and leader back in 2016 with the death of Maurice White.

Really sad, I still saw him LIVE at the Expo 2020 Dubai when he performed with the group in January this year.
May his soul rest in perfect peace AMEN.

Huh? People are selling their #Expo2020Dubai items for as high as Aed25,000!

WOWZA, I'm not sure I can sell any of my Expo 2020 souvenirs! Can you?
Awards given to people who visited Expo 2020 Dubai dozens of times have been spotted for sale online. The special trophies were handed out in February, when 50 of the most enthusiastic visitors to Expo Dubai 2020 were honoured in a ceremony.
The visitors, some of whom had come to the event more than 75 times since it opened in October last year, were recognised for their support of the first world's fair to be held in the Middle East.
Two awards have been listed on a popular buying and selling website, with one being sold for Dh25,000 and the other for Dh15,000. Both are described as being in flawless condition, brand new and never used. Housed in a special black presentation box, the trophy is metallic and circular, and features the Expo logo.
The items are the latest merchandise to appear online.
Yellow passports with 100 or more stamps from country pavilions are selling for more than Dh1,700 online. Special white passports, given to people who visited every country pavilion, can fetch even more. On TikTok, a number of accounts dedicated to the sale of expo items have been created.
They are posting videos that display passports filled with stamps, with one video that received more than 30,000 views.

Twitter sold to Elon Musk for $44 billion

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for $44 billion, capping a saga complete with hostile takeover threats before delivering him personal control of one of the most influential social media platforms on the planet.
Twitter famously served as a megaphone for former US president Donald Trump before the platform banned him, and Musk — a self-proclaimed “free-speech absolutist” — has said he wants to reform what he sees as the platform’s over-zealous content moderation.
“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Musk said in a statement released by Twitter. “I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots and authenticating all humans.”
The publicly traded firm will now become a private company owned by Musk, who negotiated a purchase price of $54.20 per-share, Twitter said.
“Any negotiations to sell Twitter to Musk must include clear enforceable mechanisms to uphold and maintain existing community standards, including the removal of those who violate those standards,” the group’s president Angelo Carusone said in a statement.

Check out UAE's new visas for Nigerians & everyone! Visa rules will be effective in September

The UAE Cabinet has approved one of the biggest overhauls of the visa residency system in years.
The new model, in some cases, ends the need for arrivals to acquire sponsorship.
People who enter as visitors will be able to stay for 60 days, rather than 30 days at present. The changes will come into effect by September. Parents can sponsor their male children until the age of 25, up from 18, allowing them to remain in the UAE after school and university.
This was first set out in September 2021.
The Golden Visa system will also be expanded, while new entry visas to make it easier for jobseekers, particularly graduates, to visit the country will be available. Skilled professionals on salaries of Dh30,000 ($8,100) a month or more will find it easier to gain an Golden Visa. The UAE Government Media Office announced the changes, approved by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, on Monday.
The announcement is the formal ratification by the Cabinet of a series of recent visa changes, plus new details and decisions, which are known as executive regulations.
“The new system of entry and residence is aimed at attracting and retaining global talents and skilled workers,” a media office statement said. More flexible visas will boost “competitiveness and flexibility of the job market and foster high sense of stability among UAE residents and families".

Photos: Over 100 people killed in explosion in oil refinery in Rivers State, Nigeria

More than 100 people were killed overnight in an explosion at an illegal oil refining depot in Nigeria’s Rivers state, a local government official and an environmental group said on Saturday.
“The fire outbreak occurred at an illegal bunkering site and it affected over 100 people who were burnt beyond recognition,” the state commissioner for petroleum resources, Goodluck Opiah, said. Unemployment and poverty in the oil-producing Niger Delta have made illegal crude refining an attractive business but with deadly consequences. Crude oil is tapped from a web of pipelines owned by major oil companies and refined into products in makeshift tanks.
The hazardous process has led to many fatal accidents and has polluted a region already blighted by oil spills in farmland, creeks and lagoons. The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre said several vehicles that were in a queue to buy illegal fuel were burnt in the explosion.
At least 25 people, including some children, were killed in an explosion and fire at another illegal refinery in Rivers state in October. In February, local authorities said they had started a crackdown to try put a stop to the refining of stolen crude, but with little apparent success.
Government officials estimate that Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer and exporter, loses an average of 200,000 barrels per day of oil - more than 10% of production - to those tapping or vandalising pipelines.
That has forced oil companies to regularly declare force majeure on oil and gas exports.

Announced: 9-day Eid Al Fitr break in Dubai, UAE

Dubai has become the latest Emirate to approve a nine-day Eid Al Fitr break for federal government staff.
The break will be from Saturday, April 30, till Sunday, May 8, according to the Dubai Government Human Resources Department. Official working hours will resume on Monday, May 9.
Recently, Sharjah also announced that public sector employees would get a nine-day break to celebrate the Islamic festival.
The break will be from Saturday, April 30, till Thursday, May 5, according to the Department of Human Resources in Sharjah. Combined with the Friday-Saturday-Sunday weekend in Sharjah, residents will be off for nine days. Eid Al Fitr is marked on the first day of Shawwal - the month that comes after Ramadan in the Hijri calendar. This year, the Islamic festival is expected to fall on May 2, as per astronomical calculations.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation had earlier announced that private sector staff would get a paid holiday from Ramadan 29 till Shawwal 3.

Eid Al Fitr 2022 in UAE: This year, Ramadan is expected to last 30 days

The Emirates Astronomical Society recently announced Eid Al Fitr would likely begin on May 2.

But how do astronomers determine the first day of Eid?
"By citing the Hilal, by looking at the West and the thin crescent," said Hasan Al Hariri, CEO of Dubai Astronomy Group. "The criterion is that we look for a thin crescent above the horizon after the sunset in the direction towards the West."
The UAE moon-sighting committee will convene to confirm the official starting date for the Islamic festival. Explaining the process ahead of Eid Al Ftir, which is just a little over two weeks away, Al Hariri pointed out that looking up at celestial bodies, such as the Moon, can elicit feelings of reverence and compel one to contemplate the greater meaning of existence.
“Muslims look towards the western horizon for the new moon on the 29th day of Sha'ban, the eighth month,” he said. At the end of every month, astronomers look at the Western horizon. Around the 29th day, they search for the crescent, which indicates that the new month will start after that day. "But if we cannot see the Moon, then it will become the 30th day," Al Hariri explained.

For those who fast, Al Hariri said time management is crucial.
"Time, as we know, is one of the most important elements in our life," he said. "Based on the importance of time, everything else can be measured and quantified. Civilisation has flourished because people have started to appreciate the value of time. So, emphasising time and its measurement is one of the most important elements laid down by Islamic Shar'i."
Al Hariri also noted that Muslims look to the Sun for guidance when praying five times a day.
"We use the Moon for creating the month and the year. With this, Almighty or Allah has given us certain kinds of rituals or festivals - Ramadan, Eid and then another Eid.
All of this is determined by identifying the Hilal moon at the beginning of the month and then counting the (days of the) month." The lunar month, he added, cannot be 28 days or 31 days.
"It must either be 29 days or 30 days," he said.

Hotel occupancy hit 15-year high in March, thanks to #Expo2020Dubai

Hotel occupancy in Dubai reached a 15-year high last month on the back of Expo 2020.

Dubai’s hotel industry reported 90 per cent or better occupancy in any given month for the first time since 2007 in March, driven by the final weeks of Expo 2020, which concluded on March 31. Expo 2020 Dubai recorded over 24 million visits during the six-month-long event and welcomed 192 countries. The mega event expedited the recovery of the local economy after the Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition to the hospitality sector, retail, tourism, aviation, and many other industries benefited from the Expo. A recent report commissioned by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce found that 76.5 per cent of companies in Dubai said Expo 2020 Dubai boosted business growth, while 73.5 per cent entered into new partnerships. According to STR, occupancy level reached 91.7 per cent in March while average daily rates hit Dh891.46 and revenue per available room (RevPAR) at Dh817.9.
“Like past renditions of Expo in Shanghai (2010) and Milan (2015), the end of the ‘mega event’ proved to be the busiest for Dubai. The last time monthly occupancy in Dubai reached 90 per cent was March 2007 when there were roughly 90,000 less rooms in the market,” it said.
Additionally, the ADR level was Dubai’s second-highest of the pandemic era, behind December 2021, when it reached Dh948.56, and market RevPAR was the highest since December 2015. “When looking at daily data, occupancy was higher than 90 per cent for 25 days during the month with a peak of 96.0 per cent on March 24,” STR said. There were 759 hotels and hotel establishments accounted for in Dubai in January 2022 as compared to 711 in January last year.
Guest nights in January were at 3.04 million during the same month this year compared to 2.65 million in January 2021, according to a Dubai Chamber’s recent report.

Photos: Christian Tobechukwu Obumseli stabbed to death by his white American Instagram-model girlfriend

An American man of Nigerian descent has died after he was stabbed at a Miami high-rise in what officials are calling a domestic dispute.
Miami police are investigating after Christian Obumseli, 27, was fatally stabbed on Sunday night, April 3, at the One Paraiso luxury building at 3131 Northeast Seventh Avenue in Edgewater.
Police said there was a physical altercation between Christian Obumseli and his girlfriend, 25-year-old Courtney Clenney, before he was stabbed. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital and later died, police said.

Florida police say a 27-year-old Miami man died of a knife wound to the chest Sunday — as video shows his Instagram model girlfriend was spotted soaked in blood, wearing handcuffs and being questioned by investigators. But so far, there have been no charges.
Christian Tobechukwu Obumseli suffered "an apparent knife wound" in a domestic violence incident before first responders rushed him 2.5 miles away to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami police said in a statement. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. A lawyer for his girlfriend, Courtney Clenney, said she was defending herself.
Video showing the aftermath of the altercation obtained by TMZ appears to show a distraught, blood-covered woman in handcuffs sitting on a balcony, speaking with police. The front of her white sweatpants is stained red, as are her arms, chest, stomach and forehead. Following the stabbing, Clenney was detained and while at the police station, she was threatening to kill herself. Officers took her to the hospital where she was hospitalized under the Baker Act, and at the moment, she is not facing any charges.
Prieto said that 1 in 4 U.S. women are victims of domestic violence, as well as 1 in 9 men.
In tweets shared between 2012 to 2018, he slut-shamed black women and said he doesn't talk to them. Below are old tweets Christian shared belittling black women.
Obumseli would have turned 28 next week, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser set up by his brother. "He did not deserve for his life to be cut short by a heinous act of violence," the brother, Jeffrey Obumseli, wrote.
May justice prevail and his soul rest in peace.

Will Smith slaps Chris Rock, Smith resigns from The Academy! He gets banned & responds to this Oscar ban

Will Smith has been banned by the Academy from the Oscars and any related Academy events for the next 10 years.
The news comes after the Academy fast-tracked a meeting with the board of governors to decide the fate of the actor after he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars on 27 March.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced earlier this week that it was going to advance its annual meeting by 10 days in order to discuss sanctions for Smith.
Will Smith has responded to his 10-year ban from the Oscars. In a new statement, via The Washington Post, the actor commented:
“I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”
Earlier today (April 8), the Academy revealed the dramatic consquences for the actor, who slapped Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars ceremony in Los Angeles on 27 March. The Academy’s board met to decide Smith’s fate, in a meeting that was fast tracked. In an open letter released after the meeting, Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson wrote that this year’s Oscars “were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr Smith exhibit on stage.”
They continued: “This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted.”
Smith resigned from the Academy on 1 April, five days after the incident. In his resignation letter, Smith commented: “I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.”
He continued: “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”
Ricky Gervais on Will Smith’s 10-year Oscars ban: ‘Hopefully, he’ll only do six years with good behaviour'!

Housemaid in Dubai arrested for practising voodoo on employer

What a WAWU!
An Asian domestic worker was arrested on charges of practising witchcraft and sorcery against her employer, which is punishable under the UAE Federal Penal Code.
Dubai Public Prosecution referred the maid to the Misdemeanour Court. According to the details of the incident, the victim said she was experiencing mental and physical fatigue and suspected that her maid was practising black magic.
The victim also reported hearing strange murmurs in the middle of the night when she was in the bathroom.
When the employer confronted the maid, she denied having cast any spells. After searching the maid's phone, the victim found that the maid was communicating with a stranger to perform magic. The employer also found a picture of a doll with talismans, as well as a piece of cloth with blood hidden in the maid's room. Fahd Abdul Karim Balzmoul, head of the Assistant Prosecution Office, said the accused admitted during the interrogation that she had contacted one of her relatives to communicate with a 'religious man'. The man reportedly told her to pay Dh200 in exchange for praying on her behalf so that her employer would treat her well.
The relative then sent her a picture of the doll on WhatsApp and asked the maid to keep it on her phone, insisting that it would control her employer's behaviour.

The Academy moves Will Smith disciplinary hearing to TODAY, Friday

The Academy is ready to review Will Smith’s actions a lot sooner than they planned to.
According to New York Post
Discussion on how to discipline actor Will Smith following the slapping incident that occurred at the Oscars on March 27 has been moved up, according to an announcement made by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Academy president David Rubin shared in a letter to the academy members on Wednesday that the previously scheduled meeting on April 18 has been moved up to April 8. “The April 18 date was set in accordance with California law and our Standards of Conduct because our agenda included possible suspension or expulsion of Mr. Smith from membership,” Rubin said in a memo acquired by Variety. “We were required to provide Mr. Smith notice 15 days prior to the board meeting at which such action might be taken,” the note continued, “and also give him the opportunity to provide the board a written statement no less than five days prior to that meeting.” Smith, 53, resigned from the Academy earlier this month over the incident during the live telecast where he hit comedian Chris Rock in the face after Rock told a bald joke about the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Despite the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” actor taking his leave from the organization, the latter could still discipline him for slapping Rock, 57, onstage in front of the world. Any disciplinary action could make Smith ineligible for future awards consideration and the Academy could bar him from attending next year’s telecast. The father of three won the Oscar for Best Actor at this year’s ceremony for his role as the father of tennis pros Venus and Serena Williams in “King Richard.” In his resignation announcement, Smith said he was “heartbroken” over his actions. “I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct,” he said via a statement. He continued, “My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy.” Sony and Netflix have also put several of the “Switch” singer’s projects on pause. Sony is halting “Bad Boys 4,” while Netflix is finding a new director for “Fast and Loose.” Smith’s slave drama “Emancipation” for Apple TV+ has already been completed.
