Ronaldo ‘wants England return’ – reports

Cristiano Ronaldo told a Spanish court he “would like to return to England” due to his tax troubles in Spain, Spanish radio station Cadena Ser reported on SaturdayThe Real Madrid star was called to testify in court on Monday over accusations he evaded 14.7 million euros ($17.3 million) in tax on his image rights via a complicated web of shell companies based in the British Virgin Islands and Ireland.

That structure had been recommended to the Portuguese captain by United via their specialist sports lawyer Chris Farnell. “Chris told me it was what all the footballers did and I didn’t want to be an exception,” Ronaldo added in court. “On the field I always want to be an exception, but off it I want to be like everyone else.” If Ronaldo is found guilty he faces a fine of at least 28 million euros and potentially a three-and-a half year jail term, according to the Gestha union of experts at Spain’s Inland Revenue. However, despite being just the latest in a series of high-profile players to be investigated over their image rights in recent years, Ronaldo believes he is being targeted due to his fame. “If I wasn’t called Cristiano Ronaldo I wouldn’t be here,” Ronaldo also reportedly told the court according to Spanish media. The four-time World Player of the Year posted on social media site Instagram on Tuesday: “What bothers people is my brilliance, insects only attack lamps that shine!!!!” Ronaldo will return to training with his Madrid teammates later on Saturday for the first time since lifting the Champions League final in June. Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane had given Ronaldo an extended break due to his participation in the Confederations Cup with Portugal and his court appearance.

Apple 'working on non-iPhone Apple Watch'

The current Apple Watch range requires an iPhone to be paired via BluetoothApple is working on an Apple Watch that does not need to be paired to an iPhone, according to a report.
Bloomberg reports that the new Watch will connect directly to LTE mobile networks.
The company has begun talks with providers in the US and Europe about offering the device later this year, the report says.
Apple launched the Watch in 2015 but is yet to share any sales figures.
In a recent call to investors, Apple boss Tim Cook said his firm's watch was the best-selling smartwatch in the world.
But in the wider wearables market, Apple lags behind Chinese firm Xiaomi and San Francisco-based Fitbit, according to Strategy Analytics.

Intel modem

While originally positioned as a luxury device, Apple has more recently focused on the fitness credentials of the Watch.
Untethering it from the iPhone would open up a range of new functionality - such as allowing users to download songs on the move, even if they do not have their smartphone with them.
"Apple clearly has big plans for Watch both in the health segment and as a gateway to the connected home,” said Carolina Milanesi, consumer tech analyst at Creative Strategies.
"Direct network connection helps in both making sharing data more reliable and faster."
However, there will be concern about the battery life of the device. Most of the computational heavy-lifting on the current Apple Watch is done via the paired iPhone.
According to Bloomberg’s report, the new device’s modem will be manufactured by Intel.
The device would come on to the market several years after Apple rivals Samsung and LG launched their own cellular-enabled smart watches. However such devices have tended to be too large to gain any kind of mainstream popularity.
Apple did not respond to the BBC’s request for comment on Friday.

Encounter between US and Iranian ships 'safe and professional', navy says

Bahrain-based fifth fleet responds to Revolutionary Guard statement by saying aircraft shot flares before Iranian vessels conducted ‘gun exercise’
Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard said on Saturday that US navy ships came close to its vessels in the Gulf and shot flares.

The USS Nimitz and an accompanying battleship drew close to a rocket-bearing Iranian vessel on Friday and sent a helicopter near a number of vessels close to the Resalat oil and gas platform, the Guard said in a statement published by its official news site, Sepah News.
“The Americans made a provocative and unprofessional move by issuing a warning and shooting flares at vessels,” the statement said. “Islam’s warriors, without paying attention to this unconventional and unusual behaviour from the American vessels, continued their mission in the area and the aircraft carrier and accompanying battleship left the area.”
The US navy’s Bahrain-based fifth fleet said the incident happened while one of its helicopters was on a routine patrol in international airspace. The aircraft saw several Guard vessels approaching US ships “at a high rate of speed” and sent out flares after receiving no response when it tried to establish communications, the navy said. That prompted the Iranian boats to halt their approach.
