Vaccine for #coronavirus to be mass produced

Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca has today agreed to mass-produce a COVID-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University scientists.

Human trials of the experimental jab - called ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 - started last week and the first results are expected in mid-June. If proven to protect against the deadly virus, the deal will allow the UK to access to the vaccine 'as early as possible', the university said today.
Details of the agreement - described by Health Secretary Matt Hancock as 'hugely welcome news' - are set to be finalised in the coming weeks. Both partners said today that the venture was not-for-profit and only the costs of production and distribution would be covered. Developing vaccinations can take up to a decade and scientists have said finding an effective jab within 18 months would be 'unprecedented'. But researchers across the world are hurtling towards the target, with more than 100 candidates in development and some already being trialled on humans.
Imperial College London researchers plan to test another experimental jab, which works slightly differently, on humans this summer.

Dubai could reopen to tourists by July amid the #coronavirus pandemic

Dubai could start to reopen to tourists by July, according to a tourism official.

The process is likely to be gradual and could be delayed until September, depending on restrictions across the rest of the world, said Helal Al Marri, director general of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, speaking to Bloomberg TV.
“The thing about the scenario is a global question,” Al Marri said. “Many countries remain closed and it’s more about the bilateral discussion.”
Tourist visas have been suspended since March 17 as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Tourism is one Dubai’s biggest industries with 16.73 million visitors last year contributing over Dh150 billion to the local economy.

Is North Korea leader Kim Jong-Un dead after a botched surgery or in vegetative state?

Rumors about the North Korean leader’s health — and speculation over his possible death — have only increased over the past two weeks.

Depending on the news outlet or social media post, Mr. Kim, believed to be 36, is recuperating after a minor health issue like a sprained ankle, or he is “in grave danger” after a heart surgery. Or he has become “brain dead” or is in a “vegetative state” after a heart-valve surgery gone wrong at the hands of a nervous North Korean surgeon or one of the doctors China dispatched to treat him. Or Mr. Kim is grounded with Covid-19. Where did he get it? From one of those Chinese doctors.

Amid reports China has sent a medical team to their communist neighbors this week to check in/advise on Kim, a Hong Kong-backed news channel’s vice director — who’s apparently the niece of a Chinese foreign minister — blasted out the news herself … he’s dead. The woman put the report on a social media app called Weibo for her nearly 15 million followers to read, citing a “very solid source” about the claim Kim had, in fact, perished.
A Japanese magazine reports he’s in a “vegetative state” after a heart surgery gone wrong. The outlet reports — citing a Chinese medical expert privy to the situation — that Kim had clutched his chest in early April and fell down while visiting the countryside there.
He needed a stent procedure done, but apparently … it either wasn’t done rapidly enough, or it was botched completely by the surgeon — with some reports saying he had shaky hands.

Last week, it was reported Kim Jong-un was in a vegetative state. These reports seem to solidify the fact that the dictator’s rule has ended.
His sister, Kim Yo-jong, is believed to be preparing to replace him as Supreme Leader.

MUST-READ: #Dubai eases #coronavirus restrictions from today, April 24

Residents will be allowed to move without a permit from 6am to 10pm, authorities announced on Thursday.

In line with the decisions of the Ministry of Health and Prevention and the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA), the Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management headed by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has announced a partial reduction in the restrictions on movement in the emirate starting from Friday 24 April. The move, which coincides with the start of Ramadan, allows increased freedom of movement, while ensuring the continuation of strict precautionary and preventive measures. The Committee has also outlined a new set of guidelines on movement and a list of exempted commercial activities and vital sectors. 
"Despite the difficult circumstances the world is facing today, the UAE has set an example for dealing with the crisis. The guidance and follow up of the leadership, the combined efforts of all stakeholders and the close integration of various measures and initiatives helped the country deal effectively with the crisis. This was also made possible through the commitment of all individuals and institutions both in the private and public sector. All measures undertaken by the country have been driven by the objective of safeguarding everyone’s safety and wellbeing,” the Committee said in a statement. 
Public transport (bus & metro), restaurants & cafes (except for buffet and shisha), retail sector (malls, high-street outlets and souqs), wholesale sector and maintenance shops will be allowed to operate under certain conditions. Family entertainment facilities, cinemas, changing rooms and prayer rooms will not be allowed to operate. Hotels will be allowed to operate without opening pools, gyms, sauna and massage parlours. 
A maximum of 30% of the workforce of all organisations will be allowed to work from their offices while the rest will be required to work from home.

Reduced Restrictions on Movement for the General Public

As part of the first phase of easing of restrictions, the stringent curbs on public movement will now be limited to the period between 10.00 pm and 6.00 am. During this period, the public will be allowed to leave their homes only for medical emergencies.

Individuals will be able to leave their homes between 6.00 am and 10.00 pm without a permit. The public will be required to strictly follow precautionary measures which include maintaining physical distance from others as per guidelines and wearing a face mask. Those who do not wear a mask will be subject to a fine of AED1,000.

Exercising outside the home

Members of the public are allowed to exercise outside their homes provided they do not leave their area of residence. They can undertake activities such as walking, running or cycling for 1-2 hours each time. Only a maximum of three persons can exercise at the same time. Individuals must follow preventive measures including ensuring two-metre distance from other individuals and wearing face masks.

Family Visits

Considering the advent of Ramadan and the social customs and traditions surrounding the Holy Month, members of the public are permitted to visit first and second degree relatives. Gatherings should be restricted to not more than five people. However, visiting high-risk individuals (individuals above 60 years and those with underlying medical conditions) should be avoided. It is prohibited to hold gatherings in public or private places.

Ramadan tents and Majlises are not allowed within homes and in public places.

Shopping malls and commercial outlets

• Shopping malls, markets and commercial outlets will be open daily to the public from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Furthermore, restaurants and shops are allowed to operate at a maximum of 30 percent capacity at the shopping malls.

• Malls and retail outlets are not allowed to hold entertainment events to avoid congestion and crowding.

• There will be no valet parking at malls and restaurants. The first hour of parking in shopping malls will be free.

• Only 25% of the parking spaces will be open in order to reduce overcrowding in malls. The public should visit a mall only when absolutely necessary.

• Sterilisation operations will continue inside malls. Visitors will be subject to temperature checks at entrances and will be required to wear masks as a condition for entering a mall. Malls are also required to make sterilisers widely available to ensure the highest level of protection for visitors and workers.

• All shopping malls will have a medical isolation room for emergency purposes in case someone in the mall is suspected to be infected with the virus.

• Individuals above the age of 60 and children between three and 12 years of age will not be allowed to enter malls.

• As part of a new mandatory policy, purchases can be returned or exchanged at all stores and outlets only of there is a defect.

• Malls and outlets are encouraged to use smart and electronic payment methods and avoid the use of cash.

Restaurants and Cafes

• Restaurants and cafés are allowed to operate normally but are not permitted to serve shisha and buffet. Dine-in customers are allowed but should occupy only a maximum of 30% of the outlet’s capacity.

• A two-metre physical distance should be strictly maintained between individuals. All diners and staff should wear masks.

• Only single-use cutlery can be used at restaurants and cafes.

• Restaurants are allowed to provide food delivery services between 10.00 pm and 6.00 am.

• Services offered at salons for males and females will be restricted to hair and nail services. Customers can be received only by prior appointment and all preventive and health measures should be strictly observed.

Public Transport

• Public transport services, including Dubai metro services, will be resumed from Sunday 26 April. The normal tariff system will be reintroduced. Precautionary measures will continue to be followed and there will be specific guidelines for passengers.

• Red and green line metro services will operate between 7.00 am and 11.00 pm.

• Preventive measures should be strictly followed by all passengers and staff in metros, taxis and buses and at public transport stations including maintaining physical distance and wearing face masks.

• Only two passengers are allowed in one taxi.

• Water transport, tram, limousine, and car sharing services will continue to be suspended.

Administrative offices for companies and institutions

• Employees are allowed to work in offices only if it is absolutely necessary. Their numbers should not exceed 30% of the total workforce. The rest of the workforce can continue working remotely from home. Companies should constantly monitor the number of employees and visitors entering and leaving the workplace every day.

• Meetings should be held at the office only if it is absolutely necessary. Attendees should not exceed five people and each person should maintain a two-metre physical distance from others.

• Daily sterilisation of the workplace is mandatory and employees and visitors should be provided with sanitisers at all times. Everyone is required to wear face masks when at the workplace.

General guidelines

• Individuals are prohibited from distributing food except through mass distribution initiatives organised under the supervision of licensed charity organisations and relevant authorities.

• Individuals are advised not to share food with family members living in different homes. If food needs to be shared with relatives or friends living in the same area, it should be transported in sealed containers.

• Reopening of mosques has been postponed since close proximity between worshippers can pose risks of infection. Group prayers are not authorised to be held in public places and mosques. Group prayers and Taraweeh prayers are permitted at home but the worshippers must be from the same family, residing in the house.

• Individuals who step out of their homes for any purpose must wear a face mask and avoid touching any surfaces or their face. They must also use hand sanitisers and wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

• Seniors and people with chronic diseases or any illness are not allowed to leave the house and must avoid going to public places to ensure their safety.

• Domestic workers are prohibited from meeting anyone outside the home or receiving food from unknown sources. They should be provided with protective gear if they need to interact with people outside the house. They must also be guided on precautionary measures to be followed when receiving deliveries of parcels or goods (including disinfecting the packaging and using gloves).

Ramadan will start tomorrow (Friday, April 24) and Eid Al Fitr is expected to fall on May 24.
Each year, the start and end of Ramadan are announced following observations by religious experts. They are subject to change as they are determined by the sighting of a new moon. Ramadan is an important time in the Islamic Calendar, when Muslims fast (also known as sawm) from sunrise to sunset for approximately 30 days. Doing so is one of the five pillars of Islam. Working hours will be reduced during Ramadan and the school day is generally shortened to five hours, even when distance learning.

#BreakingNews! BIE proposes to postpone #Expo2020Dubai

The Executive Committee of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) has unanimously agreed to propose the postponement of Expo 2020 Dubai to October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.

However, the date change requires the support of a two-thirds majority of Member States of the BIE (Article 28 of the Paris Convention of 1928), so the General Assembly will now be called upon to vote on the Executive Committee’s recommendation.
Voting will be carried out remotely between Friday 24 April and Friday 29 May. Members of the Committee – delegates of 12 Member States elected by the BIE’s General Assembly - met virtually today to examine the change in dates requested by the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This request was made after a meeting of the Expo 2020 Dubai Steering Committee on 30 March, in which participating countries expressed their need to postpone the Expo’s opening in order to overcome the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Assessing the unforeseen impact of the Covid-19 on public health, economic activity and global restrictions on movement, the Executive Committee unanimously recommended approving the UAE’s request to postpone the Expo, and to maintain the name “Expo 2020 Dubai”. Considering the practical impossibility of holding a General Assembly, Member States will be asked to cast their vote remotely by Friday 29 May.
Should the motion receive a two-thirds majority of eligible and voting Member States, the dates of Expo 2020 Dubai will be officially changed to 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022.

We have a new app for tracing person-to-person #COVID19 cases in the UAE

A new app called TraceCovid lets you track COVID-19 in the UAE and help curb the spread of the virus in the community.

The app is capable of identifying people who have been in close contact with the virus and works as a platform for authorities to immediately reach out to individuals who have possibly been infected and provide them with the necessary healthcare and treatments, with the aim to minimise the spread of the virus. You need a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone for the app to work.
Phones with the software installed are then enabled to exchange and store an encrypted Secure Tracing Identifier (STI). Then, if one of the users becomes infected, the relevant authorities will be able to access the user’s data and timestamp, while ensuring complete privacy of personal information, according to a Wam.ae report. The app is available on both IOS and Android, simply search TRACECOVID, install it and enable Bluetooth. 93 people recover from #coronavirus in the #UAE bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,188

The UAE on Friday announced 477 new cases of COVID-19.

Two Emirati patients have died and 93 patients have recovered. According to the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the latest cases were detected after conducting more than 24,000 COVID-19 tests, using the best and latest medical screening techniques.
This brings the total number of cases diagnosed in the country to 6,302, while there have been 1,188 recoveries and 37 deaths so far. The ministry noted that the accelerated investigative measures resulted in the detection of 477 new coronavirus cases among various nationalities, all of whom are in a stable condition and receiving the necessary care. The ministry also revealed that two Emirati patients suffering from COVID-19 have died. They had pre-existing chronic illnesses.

Chris Cuomo’s wife now also has the coronavirus.

The TV host announced that Cristina Cuomo was positive for COVID-19 on his primetime CNN show Wednesday — about two weeks after revealing his own diagnosis.
“Cristina now has COVID, she is now positive,” said Chris, 49, during an interview with his older brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. “It just breaks my heart,” Chris said. “It is the one thing I was hoping wouldn’t happen and now it has.”
Cristina, 50, a magazine editor, had been posting updates about her husband’s condition on Instagram as the family quarantined at home, with Chris living in the basement. Her symptoms include a loss of smell and taste, which Chris said he’d heard anecdotally was more common in milder cases of the disease.
His symptoms were more severe, and included a fever so extreme, he’d chipped a tooth while shivering.

A Saudi Arabia Investment Fund buys Newcastle United

The long-awaited Newcastle United takeover by a Saudi backed fund is almost complete.

Reports suggest the deal is actually done and now both sides are just waiting on higher-ups at the Premier League for approval. This follows a Saudi investment fund belonging to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman agreeing to the $379m price tag to purchase the club from Mike Ashley, the Premier League club’s owner.
The discounted price (it was originally listed at £424m) is finalised according to reports.

Dubai move permits updated: PLEASE READ & OBEY

The Dubai Government has updated the use of move permits established in light of the COVID-19 outbreak, adding an option for ATM cash withdrawals and limiting the number of times individuals apply.

On the DXB Move Permit site, it states the users “can apply for Grocery/Pharmacy supplies one time every three days.”

Essential trips to grocery markets and pharmacies are only permitted a travel time of up to three hours. There is also a new option to get a move permit for ATM cash withdrawals, with this being limited to one time every five days.

 

Currently, residents in Dubai can apply for a permit for essential trips for grocery and pharmacy supplies, ATM cash withdrawals and emergencies. Dubai Police recently clarified the use of move permits in Dubai, stating whether you’re walking, cycling or driving, you need a permit to avoid legal action.
