Malaysia today installs its new king, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah

Malaysia installed a new king today after the last monarch abdicated in a historic first following his reported marriage to a Russian ex-beauty queen.

Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah was crowned monarch after Sultan Muhammad V stepped down following his marriage to former Miss Moscow, Oksana Voevodina. In a ceremony steeped in pomp and centuries of tradition, the sports-loving sultan, dressed in aqua blue formal wear, took the oath of office at the national palace in Kuala Lumpur.
The ceremony was televised nationally and attended by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and hundreds of guests decked out in Islamic finery. Before being sworn in at the palace, the 59-year-old, who is also the ceremonial ruler of central Pahang state, was given a welcome at the national parliament and inspected a guard of honour.

The new king is an avid athlete who holds a string of positions on sporting bodies. He is on the council of world football governing body FIFA, president of the Asian Hockey Association, and used to be the head of the Football Association of Malaysia. After attending school in Malaysia, the keen polo player went on to study in Britain where he attended the Sandhurst military academy, according to a biography published on official news agency Bernama.

Dubai Airport’s Smart Gates will soon test your health

DXB's smart gates will soon be able to detect traveller’s vitals, thanks to the new “Smart Health Tracks”.

The system will use thermal cameras to recognise whether a patient is sick through body temperature by scanning their face and body. If a passenger is in ill health coming into the country, it will then share this data with the Ministry of Health and Prevention so they can start taking care of the traveller.
Not only will this reduce check-in times at hospitals for patients in need of care, but it will also alert medical teams so they can provide first-aid medical attention when needed. A model of the smart gate was displayed at the Arab Health Congress and Exhibition, showcasing how the thermal cameras can detect passengers' body temperature by scanning their face and body thermal print.
The data collected and passenger details will be in a shared database for the Ministry of Health and Prevention to access, but also guarantees high levels of privacy and security.
The Smart Health Track is currently at its initial stages, and will soon be further tested.
It’s not been stated when the system will officially be put in place.

UAE private sector holiday for Pope Francis mass ticket holders

Are you heading to the Pope's mass in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday February 5?

The government has just announced that private sector workers with tickets to the event will be given the day off. More than 140,000 people are expected to make the trip to Zayed Sports City for the special mass. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation says:
"The holiday for permit holders underlines the UAE’s commitment to acceptance and open-mindedness during the Year of Tolerance, and its ongoing dedication to facilitating interfaith dialogue."
Pope Francis will arrive in the UAE on February 3 and visit the Presidential Palace the following day to meet HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. He will then meet with leaders of other faiths in the capital before heading to the Founder's Memorial. On Tuesday he will visit St. Joseph's Cathedral in Abu Dhabi before the public mass at Zayed Sports City.
There will be free transport for people to get to the mass, with some people's journey's starting at 11pm the previous day. No vehicles will be allowed on Abu Dhabi island on Tuesday, so those with tickets will have to get specially organised buses from dedicated pick-up points.
Tens of thousands of people are also expected to tune into the mass at www.uaepapalvisit.org.

R&B legend James Ingram dead at 66 after battling Brain Cancer

James Ingram, the Grammy-winning singer who launched multiple hits on the R&B and pop charts and earned two Oscar nominations for his songwriting, has died, according to a close associate.

He was 66.
Debbie Allen, an actress-choreographer and frequent collaborator with Ingram, announced his death on Twitter on Tuesday.
Ingram was born February 16, 1952 in Akron, Ohio.

#MAGA? Jussie Smollett, star of #Empire, attacked in what Police call ''a possible hate crime''

Jussie Smollett, one of the stars of the Fox television show “Empire,” was attacked in Chicago early Tuesday morning by two people who yelled racial and homophobic slurs and wrapped a rope around his neck, according to the police, who said they were investigating the incident as “a possible hate crime.”

Smollett, who is black and publicly came out as gay in 2015, was walking on a downtown street when two people approached him and yelled the slurs, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department. The attackers then began hitting Smollett in the face and poured an “unknown chemical substance” on him.
One of the attackers also wrapped a rope around Smollett’s neck before the duo fled.
“Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime,” the police statement said.
The Chicago Sun-Times, citing a police spokesman, said that Smollett went to an apartment after the attack, and his manager called the police. When officers arrived, a “thin, light rope” was still around Smollett’s neck, said the spokesman.
Chicago Police have released two photos of potential persons of interest in the Smollett investigation and issued a community alert.

Gospel Singer Funmi Aragbaye loses husband, Elder Bola Aragbaye

Funmi Aragbaye, a popular gospel musician and National President of the Gospel Musicians’ Association of Nigeria, has lost her husband, Elder Bola Aragbaye.

 

Elder Aragbaye died at about 2:30pm on Wednesday, aged 77, at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. During his lifetime, he worked at the Nigerian Tribune as a journalist under the supervision of ex-Governor of Lagos State Lateef Jakande, after which he left in 1967 to join The Sketch Press Limited, where he rose to become Editor. He was appointed Chief Press Secretary to the late Chief Adekunle Ajasin, a former Governor of Ondo State, in 1981.
He clocked 77 on November 10, 2018, and is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and other family members.

Netflix users have been warned of a new email scam claiming their accounts have been deactivated.

The email, which began infiltrating Australian inboxes on Monday, directs the user to a fake Netflix 'sign in' page, where they are encouraged to update payment details and personal information.
The email threatens to delete subscribers' accounts permanently if they don't hand over their details. 'We've temporarily suspeneded [sic] your account due to some issues in the automatic verification process,' the email reads. 'We will provide you with all the steps you need to unlock your account. Please follow these instructions after you click on the link below.'
The malicious sender displays the name 'NETFLlX' with a lower case 'L' to replace the 'i'. The link provided resembles the real Netflix 'sign in' page. Cybercriminals have gone to painstaking lengths to duplicate the original page by using the same colour scheme, logo, fonts and popular covers of shows and movies.
Web and email security service MailGuard was the first to detect the scam.
They have warned Netflix subscribers to be wary of the spelling and spacing errors in the email.

Asia Bibi can walk free after blasphemy acquittal upheld in Pakistan

A Christian woman who has been in hiding since Pakistan’s Supreme Court overturned her blasphemy conviction last year, leading to violent protests and death threats, is apparently free to leave the country, after the court on Tuesday dismissed a challenge to its earlier ruling.

The woman, Asia Bibi, a farmworker with five children, spent eight years on death row after being convicted in 2010 of blaspheming Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. She denied the accusations, which she said were made after she had an argument with Muslim co-workers. Ms. Bibi was released from prison after the Supreme Court acquitted her in October. But hard-line Islamists, who led large protests in the days after her acquittal, called for her execution, and she has remained in hiding. She has sought asylum overseas, but the government said she could not leave Pakistan until the high court had heard a petition calling for a review of her acquittal.
On Tuesday, a three-member Supreme Court panel led by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa dismissed that petition.

Housekeeper of billionaire Warren Stephens rescued after being trapped in New York City elevator for 3 days

Billionaire investment banker Warren Stephens and his family are “relieved and thankful” that their long-time housekeeper is doing well and recovering after spending the weekend trapped in an elevator at their New York townhouse.

The woman, identified by the Associated Press as Marites Fortaliza, 53, of Queens, spent three days trapped in an elevator at the family’s townhouse on East 65th Street in Manhattan. Firefighters freed her after forcing their way into the elevator, which stalled between the second and third floors. The owners had been away for the weekend.
The cause “is being investigated and appropriate measures will be taken to ensure that something like this never happens again,” the company said in the statement. Stephens is worth $2.6 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

#ICYMI: Standard Chartered #DubaiMarathon 2019 was won by East Africans! #SCBDubaiMarathon

As always, tens and thousands participated in the 20th edition of the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon.

The winners in the 42.195km run in the male and female category were announced:
Ruth Chepngetich from Kenya won the 42km race in the women's category and Getaneh Molla Tamire from Ethiopia finished first in the men's category.
People flocked from all over the world to run the 42.195km stretch of road in Jumeirah on Friday, the 25th of January, 2019.

“Black Panther” took home the top award for best performance by a cast in a motion picture at the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night.

On the TV front, “This Is Us” nabbed the ensemble award for drama, while “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won the comedy prize.

The 25th annual ceremony highlights performances across film and television. Among individual acting awards, Rami Malek was recognized for playing the iconic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Glenn Close won for “The Wife.” Amazon’s comedy “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” walked away with a leading three awards, including best actress for Rachel Brosnahan and best actor for Tony Shalhoub.

TripAdvisor votes 2 of Dubai's hotels among the best in the world

Two Dubai hotels have been voted among the best in the world, according to a new study.

 

One&Only The Palm and Raffles Dubai are on TripAdvisor's list of the top 25 luxury properties across the globe. The travel company used reviews from millions of users to calculate the rankings, which are released each year. Visitors praised One&Only The Palm's "amazing" staff and romantic location amid lush, landscaped greenery.
At the pyramid-shaped Raffles Dubai, guests were particularly impressed by the "beautiful" interiors and large balconies.

Seven years ago at the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic battled past Rafael Nadal in a historic, marathon final.
